'Meme
genres may be regarded as prominent examples of vernacular creativity. While
one might expect that in the absence of formal gatekeeping people would create
an endless array of meme types, in reality, participants tend to mould their
memetic contributions according to a surprisingly small number of formulations' Milner, 2012; Shifman, 2013.
The new meme style was lip-sync videos that can be easily created using simple editing software and creating a video that people can easily copy, just overlaying them miming to a track of their favourite song. This helped create a sense of creative community within the meme world allowing some social function. Now days apps such as Musically which changed to Tic Tok easily allow simple meme creating, with the use of the app, meaning essentially the whole app is a giant meme book.
Developing from the lip- dub meme videos a lot of schools in particular started to create a one take lip-dub videos to promote their schools, their sports team etc... or to raise money for charity.
In this sense, digital culture seems to represent a new amalgamation between top-down mass-mediated genres and bottom-up mundane types of rhetorical actions showing how the development of viral lip-dub videos on multimedia platforms.
The app Tik Tok has been created solely for the purpose of lip syncing to a song of your choice. Where the users’ lip-dub a section of their chosen song, they are also able to edit the footage with effects and transitions.
The shareability of this platform helps uses create a transmedia story, where they could take a photo meme and recreate it in video form or from a song to video.
Heres my example of me giving it a go.
Apps such as snapchat are a more modern way of creating memes, you are able to add a filter over the top of your face warping and changing your face or that of animals. This is then has a wider shareability than your standard photoshop memes, because of it ease of use. You just point and shoot and the app does everything for you.
Here is a example of one of the filters you can use, but rather than of a human we used it on Silver my friends dog.
We used the filters on snapchat to create funny photos of her.
The more traditional way is by using meme generators or photoshop, that one being obvious.
Photoshopping
photos has been around since the early 2000s with people getting creative with
the editing software photoshop.
This could allow them to morph photographs to give playful new body shapes, placing an object where it wouldn’t normally be or editing over cartoon faces etc... This method of de-constructing photography’s truth has with the images being transformed through modern technology (editing software) leaving no footprints of any manipulation has led to concerning ideas within social media. For example, editing a woman’s body giving unrealistic beauty standards.
A lot of the topics for photoshop memes can be very political and others can represent social issues around the world. For example Donald Trump.
Memes are much more powerful than just something for amusement. Donald Trump has followed the patterns of the creation of viral memes to generate his power today using political propaganda. Which I believe helped him towards the power he gained over the years and finally becoming president currently.
With his controversial policy ideas for a wall ‘ I will build a great, great wall, on our southern border’ and ‘ we are going to make our country great again’ Donald trump 2015.
These ideas left trump open to being ridiculed by the news, over social media as people saw his ideas a joke. He used this to his advantage as it got people talking about him as it was so controversial. By Trump using memes to convey his message it was the fastest way to put an idea into someone’s head, into the publics head.

Tik ToK is completely public so users need to be careful of the content they post upon the app.
Another one of my favourite type of memes are photoshop memes!!

Through the years he has become a growing businessman,
to celebrity now becoming Americas president. Trump was a well-known businessman
with his name on a lot of buildings the most well-known one being trump tower.
The tower allowed trump to appear on interviews on local news channels in New
York which would develop him to become a celebrity. This new found fame lead
him to have cameos in tv shows, ads and films. The repetition of trump lead to
the public not having to know his background but recognise that he was rich,
tough and successful by the way he acted on tv, which lead to many Americans
idolising him as a symbol of wealth and power.
In the past the means of technology has been used to boost a presidents candancy with communication with the public, FDR used the radio, JFK used the television well Trump used twitter.
With his tweets being
unfiltered and uncensored he has been left open to the most scrutiny, but any controversial
thing he tweets makes him more aware to the world. With the two biggest things
that spread across twitter being controversy and memes he used this to his
advantage. In the past the means of technology has been used to boost a presidents candancy with communication with the public, FDR used the radio, JFK used the television well Trump used twitter.
