The very early Machinima was by creating stories inside games using their software. One of the most earliest methods of this was:
In the early 2000s the site Machinima.com was created for content creators to share their content. It was the first sort of hub for machinima. The brand became the go to network for gaming on YouTube, allowing their creators to generate income by signing a partnership with them. The majority of the gaming creators on YouTube at one point have been signed with Machinima, gaining over 12 million subscribers. With its most popular series being the 'Call of Duty' being the forefront for game play commentaries. The channel would also hold streams under 'Machinima Live' show.
Machinima closed down in January 2019 sadly as Machinima was overtaken by Otter Media, and in turn all Machinima creators were transferred to "Fullscreen", another Otter Media operated agency.

In recent years, there has been a rising interest in the creative practises associated with massive online communities, including crafters, hackers, DIY, and other expert amateurs. One strategy for researching creativity at this scale is through an analysis of a community’s outputs, including its creative works, custom created tools, and emergent practises for example inside World of Warcraft machinima.
Machinima refers to digital videos that are primarily produced (i.e., set, acted out, and recorded) in video games and video recorded with screen capture software. The video is a song 'Don't Make Me Get My Main' by CraniusPresents using Machinima. These types of videos were quite popular when I was in school, some of them going viral because of their widespread amusement.

Although not conventionally machinima a very well known Series created by the company Rooster teeth: Red Vs Blue created in 2003. This series was created by Burnie Burns, mainly produced using the machinima technique of synchronising video footage from a game to prerecorded dialogue and other audio. The series success across 16 series with between 16-30 episodes a series became vastly popular.
Along side the popularity on YouTube the Red Vs Blue memes helped the brand launch the idea across multiplatforms allowing it to become transmediated.
The stories that were developed allowed viewers to generate creative fictional stories without the costs of huge set designs, as many creators couldn't afford cameras, sets and actors. This stems from playing with dolls or action figures as a child, developing onto the playfulness. Many of the stories referenced what was happening in the world, personal issues or referencing the first machinima game DOOM.

The way they created the early on Red vs Blue to get different angles were filmed by using the sniper rifle scope. They would have to have an extra character in each game to be used as a camera operator, which you can see below.
The other characters in the scene would bob about using the more traditional controls of the game. As the popularity developed for the Red vs Blue series the creators of the game gave them more flowing cameras easing up the difficulty of filming inside the game servers.
A lot of Machinima is very meme based such as this article from Slightlyimpressive. Who shows real life day to day things you re unable to do in the game World of Warcraft.

We have ladders all over the game, and although our characters are perfectly capable of defeating any threat posed to Azeroth and beyond, we still haven’t figured out rungs.'Slightlyimpressive, 2015. These type of little things were created into memes and machinima making a joke at the characters being unable to climb ladders but are able to defeat terrifying monsters - amusing!
SIMS
One of my favourite type of machinima is through the use of sims, the Sims is a game where the players create virtual avatars, called Sims, and take them into a 3D world. The purpose of the game is to interact with other Sims in the game, obtain new decorations for your home and keep your Sim alive.
Much unlike halo the cameras in sims give you a complete 360 movement around your character, zooming as far in and out as you choose making it an easy choice for machinima to be created on.
Through the use of machinima creators are able to make their own stories, music videos or trailers, this is a creator made trailer for the film The Shape of Water on Sims 4.
